According to the United Nations Development Fund for Women, just under 40% of Lima’s poorest families are headed by women. At times, these single mothers can rely on help from humanitarian organisations, including... Selavip. This internationally established NGO that has been funding housing projects across the globe for over 40 years. In May 2013, the organisation joined forces with local NGO Desco and local Etex company Fábrica Peruana Eternit. Their mission? To help single mothers in the Peruvian capital of Lima through better housing.
On the outskirts of Lima, these three `partners in charity’ set out to build 30 homes for poor single mothers.
Employees from Fábrica Peruana Eternit not only ensured technical assistance, they also provided the materials to build solid drywall residences. The result? Thirty practical 22.36 m² homes, built entirely with Superboard fibre cement boards. These materials are perfect for withstanding Peru’s harsh climate.
The courageous Mrs Juned Valenzuela takes care of her daughter, all by herself. Both suffer from poor lung health, caused by the region’s high ambient humidity. Their new home, however, will fully protect them from the harsh climate conditions and thus considerably improve their quality of life.
