The goal of this project was to create a safe way for employees to exit the building if there was a fire. We also had to ensure that the solution complies with the requirements of part T of the National Building Regulations (NBR), issued in terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act No. 103 of 1977). These regulations stipulate that any individual must have access to an escape door or passage within 45 metres from his or her workstation. We also successfully converted the specification for this project - a two-hour fire escape tunnel - to Etex material.
The Challenge
Initially, the client wanted to go ahead with a one-hour fire rating system, but that would not make them compliant with SANS 10400-T, so we had to guide them to ensure a two-hour fire rating system was procured and installed.
The Solution
To create a two-hour fire rating with minimal wall thickness and optimal fire resistance, we opted for the 15mm Siniat FireCheck Plasterboard System. This was the best solution as Promatect H boards would have been too expensive. It just goes to show that you get real value for money with Etex products - plus, our products will also ensure you are compliant. For additional peace of mind, we offered the client a 10-year warranty on the two-hour fire escape tunnel. Regular site inspections during and upon project completion ensure warranty compliance. The advice and support offered by Etex’s advisor, Willem Venter, also helped the contractors to not only meet but exceed the client’s expectations - whilst staying within budget. The Siniat FireCheck Plasterboard Systems are tested in accordance with SANS 10177 part 2 – 2005 at ABS Pretoria fire testing facility. These systems also carry the global GreenTag certification and are much friendlier to the environment.
